9/2/2018 0 Comments The Cahill Chronicles Vol. 2Welcome to the second full week of school! We are off to an amazing start in our classroom. We have many routines and procedures mastered and my students have loved learning all our new "chants" and "attention getters". Our favorite one is I say "Peanut Butter" and they respond "Jelly time!" :) *Reminders* BEE Book- Please make sure these folders come to school each and every day. The reading calendar should be filled out and initialed by a parent each night. 15 minutes is required of each student, however reading more than that is even better!! :) SEE SAW- Please make sure you and your child is connected to this app. I only have 13/20 students connected. It was on a paper passed out at Lemonade Social. If you need information on how to login in, please send me an email. :) Wish List and Donor's Choose STEM project- Thank you SO much for all the donated items from our amazon wish list and some donations to our Donor's Choose STEM project. Feel free to check either of them out. I greatly appreciate it very much! :) Amazon: http://a.co/bKx1zbQ Donor's Choose: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/stem-resources-for-the-win/3511132/ What Are We Learning? Reading: We will continue going through our Reader's Workshop procedures this week. We will also continue learning some daily 5 stations including read to someone and word work. We are working hard on building our reading stamina during read to self. This is the most important piece of the daily 5 rotations as they learn to build their stamina for reading and using 'just right books' to help! We will be focusing on making predictions this week in the mini lessons. My students will also learn about nouns this week with various subjects. Writing: We will be starting our first story this week. We will continue to learn procedures of Writer's Workshop especially how and where to get supplies. This week they will learn how to gather ideas for writing by brainstorming and learning to sketch across pages (beginning, middle, end). I'm excited to see them become great writers. :) Math: We have officially started numbers talks and they are going so well. Numbers talks are about 5-10 minutes 3 times a week where students have something to solve. I ask them to share their thinking and what strategy they used (or explain as best they can) to solve it. It is not looking at making sure the answer is right as much as looking at various ways to solve it. We write them out on the smart board and share our thinking together. This week we will be working on number sense up to 120. They will be using a 120 chart and recognizing numbers from 1-120 and skip counting by 10's and 5's. Science: We will continue with "What are Scientists?" unit by exploring our five senses and their properties. Specials for the Week: Tuesday- Music Wednesday- Art Thursday- P.E. Friday- Music Wednesday at 12:00- Library check out Have a wonderful week!! :) Ms. Cahill 8/26/2018 0 Comments The Cahill ChroniclesMy newsletter will change after this first week. Since we've only been in school for a few days, this newsletter is more of information needed. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me!:) What Are We Learning? Reading- I will introduce my students to Reader's Workshop. This model functions with a whole group aspect with specific modeled teaching, read aloud, and during guided reading groups they go to daily 5 centers. We will go though procedures with all of this during this week. My students will also learn about reading stamina. We will be building their reading stamina throughout the year. We will practice finding books that are "just right" for them and making sure they choose books that are exciting and they can read! Writing- I will introduce Writer's Workshop to my students. We will be using a notebook and a folder for writing. We will set these up this week and go over expectations during this time. I will have student write about summer activities this week. We will practice sounding out words as we write! Math- This week we will start calendar math at the beginning of the math block and then introduce math warm ups. These warm ups are meant to take a few minutes only and get practice of concepts. I will slowly introduce some math games and math apps this week for them to use during guided math groups when they are not with me in small groups. Science/ Social Studies- We will continue to build our community in our classroom by doing various activities to get to know one another better. In science we will start the unit on What is a scientist? My students will be learning what a scientist is, what tools they use, and the different kinds of scientists there are! Specials for the week: Monday A- Art. Tuesday B-P.E. Wednesday C- Music. Thursday A- Art. Friday B- P.E. Behavior/Class Dojo This week your child will come home with a sheet about class dojo. I will only be using this at school. I will be tying in points to earning money. They will earn money and on Fridays be able to spend the money on coupons to redeem. The coupons are such things as lunch with the teacher to borrow a teacher's stuffed animal for the day. My students will be introduced and learn all about this during the week. If your child had a consistent area where he or she is having problems with, I will contact you either by email or phone. We are signing a 'social contract' tomorrow after we discuss what the expectations are like for them in the classroom. I will make a copy to send home so that you can further discuss at home and be aware of the expectations in my classroom. SeeSaw: We will be using this online tool to post things we do in the classroom as well as students work. Please use the sheet I gave out at Lemonade Social and sign your child up to use. :) It's been a great start to our year. I appreciate all your generosity from both our wish list on amazon and our Donor's Choose project with STEM kits. I am excited to see how far all my students will come this year!!! :) Kindly, Ms. Cahill :) |
